Massage Therapy

Massage therapy has been shown through research to improve physical well being. Most people are quite familiar with the stress lowering benefits of massage, however some may not know all of the other identified benefits of massage.

According to Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals at abmp.com, experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress-related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress.

Massage is an effective tool for managing this stress, which translates into decreased anxiety,  enhanced sleep quality, greater energy, improved concentration, increased circulation, and  reduced fatigue. There are many additional benefits of massage, some of which you can check out here.

Stress and Fight or Flight

A massage by me goes beyond simple kneading the muscles to soften them and increase blood flow. I focus on calming the body’s stress response both in the muscles and in the brain. I also help clients identify the source of stress response, which may vary from the usual suspects all the way to food and chemical sensitivities.

Anything the body perceives as a threat can trigger a significant tightening of the muscles along the back of the body from the top of the head to the Achilles tendon near the heal. This response is know as the fight or flight response or tendon-guard reflex, and the muscle tension is the body’s preparation to run or attack the threat. When that “attack” doesn’t happen, the muscles remain tight because the nervous system doesn’t get the message that the threat is over.

Gentle Massage

There are a number of very gentle massage techniques that help “clue-in” the nervous system that the threat has passed allowing the muscles to relax. The key word is “gentle”. Pain can quickly activate the stress response, therefore massage which is painful may actually increase muscle tension.

A SPWC massage should never hurt. You, the client, are completely in charge of the amount of pressure and the intensity of the massage. For some, a light touch is all the body wants, needs, or can handle. For others, a stronger, deeper massage is desirable. You will never hear me suggest you should endure the pain and breathe through it because it’s good for you. If it hurts, I will immediately ease up and look for another way to help the area of concern.

If you have made a conscious choice to avoid massage therapy because you believe it has to be painful to be effective, I invite you to give me the opportunity to show you how gentle, relaxing, and effective massage can be.

New Clients

As a new client, it is my goal to give you an amazing massage experience. I feel honored that you have given me the opportunity to work with you, and it is my privilege to give you the very best I have to offer. It is a good idea to arrive a few minutes early to your first massage appointment so we have plenty of time to discuss your individual needs. You can even save a bit of time by printing and completing the New Client Forms before you arrive.
